Maokai Build 26.22

B

Maokai brings more reliable crowd control than almost any tank: a point-and-click dash root, a long-range root wave to open fights, and saplings that zone whole chokes. A fine but unremarkable pick at 49.6% and slipping this patch, he wins by locking a target down and simply not dying while his team collapses onto it. His passive healing and natural bulk let him facecheck and soak for the group. Land the roots and the fight is decided before it starts.

When Is Maokai Strongest?

The win rate runs highest in the opening minutes and eases off later, and games at this rank average around 28 minutes. Maokai wins by using that window to catch enemies out with his roots and force early objectives, since his crowd control lets his team turn one pick into a dragon or a tower before the game scales.

Maokai Item Build

Maokai is a durable engage tank who roots targets in place and drags fights toward his team with relentless crowd control. The build stacks health, armor, and magic resist so he survives the dive while his sustain keeps him topped off between skirmishes.

Best Maokai Runes

Aftershock is the standard pick here, and his kit gives him easy ways to trigger it, whether he is poking with saplings or committing with a root. He lands his crowd control before the enemy can respond, so he gets his value the instant a fight starts. Keep the rest of the page tuned so he survives the counterattack after he dives in.

Build toward Locket of the Iron Solari into Bandlepipes to become the frontline that never falls over. Stalling out hurts, so press any early edge you get. Bandlepipes comes online at about the 19-minute mark, and after it his roots buy enough time for your team to delete whatever he catches. Prioritize that item so your engages actually stick.

Maokai Skill Order

Maokai opens with Twisted Advance at one, which gives him lockdown before anything else. Bramble Smash arrives at two for the knockback and slow, Sapling Toss at three, and points four and five both feed Q.

Maokai Abilities

Sap Magic is doing quiet work every fight, turning one basic attack into a heal and extra damage on a timer that ticks faster each time he casts a spell or eats one. That means spamming Bramble Smash into a clustered enemy line keeps his healing auto coming back sooner.

Maokai Matchups

Maokai wants to close the gap and root someone, so hard disengage and ranged poke that keep him at bay before he commits give him trouble. Immobile targets he can dash onto and root, then trap under his advancing wall, are where his lockdown shines.

Respect Seraphine, Lux, and Swain, who can poke him down from range or sidestep his root before he can commit. Bait the dash root out of their sightline, since a whiffed root leaves him exposed. Against Pyke, Blitzcrank, and Pantheon his layered crowd control locks them out of the fight entirely, so look to engage onto them and let your team follow up.
