Gnar Build 26.21

C

Gnar is two champions sharing a rage bar, and mastering the swap is the whole game. Mini Gnar skirmishes at range with his boomerang, then Mega Gnar becomes a raging bruiser whose ult can wall an entire team into a stun. Timing that transform, and having it ready when the fight breaks, is what separates a good Gnar from a fed one. On the weaker side at 49.2% and on the way up this patch.

When Is Gnar Strongest?

This is a late-game profile, strongest with full items online, and games at this rank average around 28 minutes. Gnar's win condition is a well-timed transform, so use the power window to poke as the small form, build rage before a fight, and land a wall-pinning engage that starts a teamfight already won.

Gnar Item Build

Gnar is a shape-shifting fighter who swings between a nimble ranged poker and a raging bruiser, so the build blends attack damage with health and resistances to make both forms threaten damage while surviving the dive. The items are meant to let the small form kite and chip until the mega form can land a fight-ending engage.

Best Gnar Runes

Fleet Footwork is the pick, and it suits his poke-and-kite pattern, the sustain and movement keep Mini Gnar healthy while he chips from range. He spends much of the game skirmishing before he commits with Mega, so the rune covers that phase, and the rest leans into the durability his engage form needs.

Build toward Trinity Force into Black Cleaver to arm the Mega side of his kit. You can lose lane and still take over once the items come online. Once Black Cleaver comes online at about the 21-minute mark, his transform windows turn into real kill threats rather than just poke, so play toward that spike and try to enter fights in Mega form with rage to spare.

Gnar Skill Order

Hop grabs one point at level 3 and waits until 14 for a second, so the leap you rely on to reposition stays at its weakest rank for eleven levels while Boomerang Throw eats ranks 1, 4, 5, 7 and 9.

Gnar Abilities

Hyper quietly powers Mini Gnar between boomerangs, stacking bonus damage and Move Speed onto his attacks, while the same slot becomes Wallop, a ground-slam stun, once he transforms. Hop springs him off a unit head for extra distance, the reposition that keeps the small form safe.

Gnar Matchups

Gnar wants to poke safely as the small form and only commit when his rage bar fills, so all-in threats that catch him mid-transformation and mobile skirmishers that dodge his boomerang give him trouble. Immobile lanes he can whittle from range and clumped enemies he can pin to a wall are what his kit punishes.

Watch for Malphite, Irelia, and Cho'Gath, who lock down Mini Gnar or catch him mid-transform when he is most vulnerable, so manage the rage bar carefully around them. Against Gwen, Gangplank, and K'Sante he pokes freely and picks his engage, so whittle them down in Mini form and swap to Mega when you are ready to wall them and go.
