Is Sharpedo Good in Emerald Playthrough?

AbilityRough Skin damages anything that touches Sharpedo. Water/Dark coverage handles Phoebe, Tate and Liza, and outspeeds most of the E4. Dies to one strong hit but ends fights before durability matters. The Wallace Champion fight is neutral for Water. Speed is the strategy.

How to Get Sharpedo in Emerald

Sharpedo turns up common on the Super Rod across fifteen ocean spots, so the evolved bruiser is catchable straight from the sea once you have the rod. Many players still raise a Carvanha to 30 instead, reaching it earlier.

Shiny Odds

Both methods here share the same odds, about 1 in 8,192 on each try. Pick whichever fits how you play.

Step 1 · Encounter Method2 in Emerald

Full Odds: Walk through grass, surf, or fish. Every encounter is its own independent shiny roll.

Breeding: Hatch eggs of this line; each egg rolls at the base shiny rate (no Masuda before Gen IV).

How is this calculated?

Every encounter has the same shiny chance, the Shiny Odds Per Try shown above. Each one is a separate roll that does not care how many you have already done, so the more you hunt, the higher your overall chance of at least one shiny. The formula below turns your odds and your number of tries into that combined chance.

chance after N tries = 1 − (1 − p)^N,  where  p = 1 / odds per try

Example at 1 in 8,192 (classic full odds): about 864 encounters for a 10 percent chance, 5,678 for 50 percent, and 18,862 for 90 percent.

The table above flips that around: it shows how many encounters it takes to reach a 10, 25, 50, and 90 percent chance at your current odds. Turning on boosts like the Shiny Charm, sandwiches, or chains improves your odds, so the encounter numbers drop.

These are estimates, not promises. Most games have no pity counter, meaning no guaranteed shiny no matter how many you hunt, so even Very Likely is not guaranteed: some hunters find one early, others go well past that point.

Sharpedo Weakness

Sharpedo's Water/Dark typing leaves it vulnerable to Electric, Grass, Fighting, and Bug. It shrugs off Psychic-type attacks completely. With 6 resistances, the defensive profile is strong. Sharpedo leans offensive (base 120 Atk) rather than trying to tank its weaknesses.

Sharpedo Emerald Guide

  • Mega Evolution isn't available in Emerald, but Sharpedo does have a Mega form in Gen 6-7 games (X/Y, ORAS, Sun/Moon). Mega Sharpedo hits 560 BST.

  • In Emerald, use Sharpedo as a cannon. Special attacks are the main output. Speed is middling, Crunch is the primary attack.

  • For Emerald, build your team around Jolteon, Celebi, and Breloom. These have the highest co-usage rates with Sharpedo in competitive formats. They cover each other's weaknesses.

  • For Emerald, run Hasty on Sharpedo. +Speed is what matters, and the -Defense cut doesn't hurt this set. Fits the cannon role.

Game Availability

Since debuting in Ruby & Sapphire, Sharpedo has appeared in 15 titles over 7 generations. Along the way, it received a Mega form in Generation 6, keeping it relevant across different competitive metas.
