How to Get Groudon in Emerald
Groudon mirrors Kyogre exactly. The Cave of Origin sighting mid-story is not catchable, and the real fight happens post-Champion at Terra Cave, a hidden spot that surfaces on a weather-determined route. It is a single level 70 encounter at catch rate 3.

| 90%very likely | 18,862-- | -- |
Time assumes -- at your pace and does not change your shiny odds.
How is this calculated?
Every encounter has the same shiny chance, the Shiny Odds Per Try shown above. Each one is a separate roll that does not care how many you have already done, so the more you hunt, the higher your overall chance of at least one shiny. The formula below turns your odds and your number of tries into that combined chance.
chance after N tries = 1 − (1 − p)^N, where p = 1 / odds per try
Example at 1 in 8,192 (classic full odds): about 864 encounters for a 10 percent chance, 5,678 for 50 percent, and 18,862 for 90 percent.
The table above flips that around: it shows how many encounters it takes to reach a 10, 25, 50, and 90 percent chance at your current odds. Turning on boosts like the Shiny Charm, sandwiches, or chains improves your odds, so the encounter numbers drop.
These are estimates, not promises. Most games have no pity counter, meaning no guaranteed shiny no matter how many you hunt, so even Very Likely is not guaranteed: some hunters find one early, others go well past that point.
For time estimates and charm math, open the Emerald shiny odds calculator with Groudon already selected.
Groudon Weakness
Groudon's Ground typing leaves it vulnerable to Water, Grass, and Ice. It shrugs off Electric-type attacks completely. Groudon's physical bulk (base 140 Def) helps cushion physical weakness hits, but special attackers are the bigger threat.
| Damage | Types |
|---|---|
| 2x (Weak) | Water, Grass, Ice |
| 0.5x (Resist) | Poison, Rock |
| 0x (Immune) | Electric |
- Dark and Steel types added — Fairy does not exist yet

Breadth over depth defines this movepool. Groudon won't stack one type's damage ceiling, but coverage across 10 types means it always has an effective option. Earthquake and Dig anchor the STAB core.

Groudon Emerald Guide
Groudon is a static encounter at Terra Cave in Emerald. Groudon appears at level 70. Save before the encounter. These one-shot Pokemon don't respawn if you knock them out or run out of Poke Balls.
Yes. Groudon is a post-game Pokemon. You need to defeat the Elite Four and enter the Hall of Fame first. Groudon becomes available after the main story is complete in Emerald.
In Emerald, use Groudon as a wallbreaker. Physical side carries the damage. Speed is middling, Earthquake is the primary attack.
For Emerald, build your team around Latios, Deoxys Attack, and Mewtwo. These have the highest co-usage rates with Groudon in competitive formats. They cover each other's weaknesses.
For Emerald, run Adamant on Groudon. +Attack is what matters, and the -Sp. Atk cut doesn't hurt this set. Fits the wallbreaker role.
