Emerald Sootopolis City

Built inside a volcanic crater you reach by diving up through the seafloor, Sootopolis is where the clash between Kyogre and Groudon comes to a head. Juan guards its Water-type gym.

Sootopolis City is in Hoenn. In the story you arrive from Route 126 to the south and continue north to Cave of Origin.

Groudon and Kyogre are fighting in the lake of Sootopolis City when you surface, and every door stays shut until their storm is calmed.

Sootopolis City Guide

  • Towns have no walkable grass, so the only wild Pokemon are out on the water. Surf or fish along a town's edge and you can pull Wingull, Tentacool, or Magikarp. A few towns hand you a Pokemon outright instead, like your starter in Littleroot and a Beldum at Steven's house in Mossdeep.

  • Lilycove tops the list, with the only full Department Store and the ferry that runs out to the Battle Frontier once you're Champion. Mossdeep hands you a free Beldum and fields a two-leader gym, and Slateport's market and shipyard keep pulling you back for story beats.
