Emerald Granite Cave

On Dewford's island, this is where you find Steven deep inside to deliver Mr. Stone's letter. The lower levels stay pitch black, so teach a Pokemon Flash before you explore them.

Granite Cave is in Hoenn, with Route 106 to the south. In the story it comes after Dewford Town and before Route 107.

GRANITE CAVE MAP

Past the lit entrance floor, Granite Cave falls into two levels of pure dark that need Flash before the ladders down can even be found.

Pokemon Encounters

Granite Cave is an early goldmine of evolutions. Aron at 40% deeper in builds toward Aggron, Makuhita feeds a Hariyama for the gym ahead, and a 10% Abra rewards anyone patient enough for Alakazam. Nosepass only shows when you Rock Smash the boulders.

HM05 Flash is the key pickup here, the move that lights the very cave you are standing in. Steven also hands you TM47 Steel Wing on the way through, with an Everstone and a Rare Candy stashed deeper down.

Granite Cave Guide

  • Almost never. You can feel your way through the dark stretches, and the cave HM that actually earns a party slot is Rock Smash, not Flash. Flash only matters for a couple of black rooms late in Victory Road, so don't waste an early move slot on it.

  • Yes, more than Flash is. Smashing the cracked rocks in Granite Cave turns up a Nosepass you won't meet any other way, and the ones in Victory Road hide Geodude and Graveler. Keep one party member who knows it so you're not backtracking when a breakable rock shows up.
