Emerald Altering Cave

A curious dead-end cave built around an e-Reader event that never left Japan. Without it, the only thing you'll ever meet inside is Zubat, making this Hoenn's most famous letdown.

Altering Cave is in Hoenn, with Route 103 to the south. In the story it comes after Battle Tower and before Desert Underpass.

You can enter Altering Cave only after the main story ends, when a rock face on Route 103 turns into a cave mouth.
  1. The mouth sits on the north side of the route's eastern stretch, reached on foot from the east or by surfing across the water.
  2. Enter through the single opening in the south wall and walk north into the central hall.
  3. The hall splits three ways: west to a broad chamber, up a short eastern stair to a raised ledge, and north then west to a corner pocket.
  4. All three branches are empty of trainers, items and hidden items, and anywhere on the cave floor can start a wild battle.
  5. Head back out the same south opening to return to Route 103.

Pokemon Encounters

Altering Cave never received the e-Reader Pokemon meant to rotate through it, so Zubat at 100% are all you will meet. A curiosity stop, not a catch stop.

Altering Cave Guide

  • Almost never. You can feel your way through the dark stretches, and the cave HM that actually earns a party slot is Rock Smash, not Flash. Flash only matters for a couple of black rooms late in Victory Road, so don't waste an early move slot on it.

  • Yes, more than Flash is. Smashing the cracked rocks in Granite Cave turns up a Nosepass you won't meet any other way, and the ones in Victory Road hide Geodude and Graveler. Keep one party member who knows it so you're not backtracking when a breakable rock shows up.
