Is Abra Good in Emerald Playthrough?
Granite Cave encounter. Abra teleports immediately, so catching it takes a fast ball or a sleep lead. AbilitySynchronize mirrors status. Kadabra at 16 has enormous Special Attack for the early game. Alakazam requires a trade, but Kadabra alone carries through Brawly, Tate and Liza, and most of the E4.
Roxanne's Pokemon outpace and outclass Abra here.
Kadabra resists most of Brawly's coverage and hits back hard.

How to Get Abra in Emerald
Abra hides in Granite Cave and on Route 116, uncommon at low levels around 7 to 10. It teleports the moment you blink, so a quick or sleep-inducing lead helps far more than chasing it.
Wild Abra may be holding when caught:

How to Get Shiny Abra in Emerald
Abra teleports through the grass on Route 116 and the upper floor of Granite Cave near Dewford, so creep through and start battles, hoping the little psychic blinks in shining before it flees. Compare Shiny Abra odds across every game
Emerald Shiny Abra Calculator
2 MethodsBoth methods here share the same odds, about 1 in 8,192 on each try. Pick whichever fits how you play.
Full Odds: Walk through grass, surf, or fish. Every encounter is its own independent shiny roll.
Breeding: Hatch eggs of this line; each egg rolls at the base shiny rate (no Masuda before Gen IV).
How many you have done, or plan to do.
| Chance | Encounters | Time |
|---|---|---|
| 10%lucky few | 864-- | -- |
| 25%one in four | 2,357-- | -- |
| 50%coin flip | 5,678-- | -- |
| 90%very likely | 18,862-- | -- |
Time assumes -- at your pace and does not change your shiny odds.
How is this calculated?
Every encounter has the same shiny chance, the Shiny Odds Per Try shown above. Each one is a separate roll that does not care how many you have already done, so the more you hunt, the higher your overall chance of at least one shiny. The formula below turns your odds and your number of tries into that combined chance.
chance after N tries = 1 − (1 − p)^N, where p = 1 / odds per try
Example at 1 in 8,192 (classic full odds): about 864 encounters for a 10 percent chance, 5,678 for 50 percent, and 18,862 for 90 percent.
The table above flips that around: it shows how many encounters it takes to reach a 10, 25, 50, and 90 percent chance at your current odds. Turning on boosts like the Shiny Charm, sandwiches, or chains improves your odds, so the encounter numbers drop.
These are estimates, not promises. Most games have no pity counter, meaning no guaranteed shiny no matter how many you hunt, so even Very Likely is not guaranteed: some hunters find one early, others go well past that point.
For time estimates and charm math, open the Emerald shiny odds calculator with Abra already selected.
Abra Weakness
Abra's Psychic typing leaves it vulnerable to Bug, Ghost, and Dark. Abra's special bulk (base 55 Sp.Def) helps absorb special-type weaknesses, though physical moves exploit the lower Defense.
| Damage | Types |
|---|---|
| 2x (Weak) | Bug, Ghost, Dark |
| 0.5x (Resist) | Fighting, Psychic |
Abra Evolutions
Abra is the start of a three-stage chain. It evolves into Kadabra first, then eventually reaches Alakazam. For breeding, average hatch time with a decent partner pool via one egg group. The evolved forms gain up to 190 total stats over Abra. View every chain in the Evolution Chart.

Abra Emerald Guide
Yes. Wild Abra in Emerald can hold Twisted Spoon (5%). Use Thief (TM46) or Covet to swipe the held item without affecting your catch chance. Quickest way to farm rare items like Twisted Spoon.
In Emerald, Abra does the job early-game if you need a Psychic type on your team. Evolve it into Kadabra before the later gyms and it holds up fine through the story.
Game Availability
Abra has been part of the series since Red & Blue, appearing in 21 titles across all 9 generations. As a Gen 1 original, it's one of the most consistently available Pokemon in the franchise.
