Mid-stage Pokemon like Abra rarely see competitive play outside of special formats. It's a waypoint on the road to Alakazam, which is where the real potential kicks in. Only weak to Bug, Ghost, and Dark. Known as the Psi Pokemon.
Abra's all-in on Sp. Atk at the expense of Defense. The special lean is obvious from the bars. Yields 1 Sp. Atk EV and follows a 1.06M XP medium-slow curve.
It sleeps for 18 hours a day. Even when awake, it teleports itself while remaining seated.
Even while asleep, it maintains a telepathic radar. It teleports when it is threatened.
Abra Weakness
VulnerableAbra's Psychic typing leaves it vulnerable to Bug, Ghost, and Dark moves. Abra's special bulk (base 55 Sp.Def) helps absorb special-type weaknesses, though physical moves exploit the lower Defense.
Abra is the start of a three-stage chain. It evolves into Kadabra first, then eventually reaches Alakazam. For breeding, average hatch time with no compatible partners via one egg group. The evolved forms gain up to 190 total stats over Abra.
How to Evolve
Breed Abra easily from the Humanshape egg group. Pass egg moves like Ally Switch, Confusion, Encore and 9 more to offspring.
One guaranteed turn is all Abra needs. Focus Sash buys it, a spread EV build EVs make it count, and Magic Guard adds something extra. The goal: deal early damage and deal damage with Psychic. The remaining moves gives it play beyond just the lead turn.

Breadth over depth defines this movepool. Abra won't stack one type's damage ceiling, but coverage across 10 types means it always has an effective option. Dream Eater and Psychic anchor the STAB core.

Abra isn't fully evolved, so it's not built for competitive play. You'll want to evolve it into Kadabra to unlock its full potential. At 310 BST, it's a stepping stone rather than a team anchor.
Abra evolves into Kadabra at level 16. Abra is the base form in a 3-stage evolutionary line.
Run Magic Guard on Abra. It's the ability that defines how you build around it and the main reason it holds a competitive niche. Abra also gets Synchronize and Inner Focus, but they don't compare.
Abra fills the attacker role. It's a special attacker with base 105 Sp. Atk. Base 90 Speed is workable — faster than some, slower than many. And it's fragile — can't afford to take many hits.
Abra appears in 21 games, including Yellow, Red & Blue, and Gold & Silver.
Abra has been part of the series since Red & Blue, appearing in 21 titles across all 9 generations. As a Gen 1 original, it's one of the most consistently available Pokemon in the franchise.
