Mid-stage Pokemon like Abra rarely see competitive play outside of special formats. It's a waypoint on the road to Alakazam, which is where the real potential kicks in. Only weak to Bug, Ghost, and Dark. Known as the Psi Pokemon.

Abra's all-in on Sp. Atk at the expense of Defense. The special lean is obvious from the bars. Yields 1 Sp. Atk EV and follows a 1.06M XP medium-slow curve.

Abra Weakness

Vulnerable

Abra's Psychic typing leaves it vulnerable to Bug, Ghost, and Dark moves. Abra's special bulk (base 55 Sp.Def) helps absorb special-type weaknesses, though physical moves exploit the lower Defense.

The natural movepool does the job, but Barrier and Encore from the egg pool give Abra something extra. Pair those with Dream Eater and Psychic for STAB and coverage across 8 types for reach, and the kit fills out nicely.

  • Abra isn't fully evolved, so it's not built for competitive play. You'll want to evolve it into Kadabra to unlock its full potential. At 310 BST, it's a stepping stone rather than a team anchor.

  • Watch for Pinsir (Bug), Gengar (Ghost), and Houndoom (Dark) when using Abra. They all hit it super-effectively with STAB.

  • Abra evolves into Kadabra at level 16. Abra is the base form in a 3-stage evolutionary line.

  • Run Magic Guard on Abra. It's the ability that defines how you build around it and the main reason it holds a competitive niche. Abra also gets Synchronize and Inner Focus, but they don't compare.

  • Abra fills the attacker role. It's a special attacker with base 105 Sp. Atk. Base 90 Speed is workable — faster than some, slower than many. And it's fragile — can't afford to take many hits.

  • Abra appears in 21 games, including Yellow, Red & Blue, and Gold & Silver.

Abra has been part of the series since Red & Blue, appearing in 21 titles across all 9 generations. As a Gen 1 original, it's one of the most consistently available Pokemon in the franchise.
