- 1From Route 102, go west into Petalburg City, north toward the Poke Mart, then west past the red-roofed building, then north to Petalburg Gym. Go through the door into the Gym.

- Back in the Gym, your father sends you on toward the next Gym, so leave Petalburg City by the west road for Route 104.

Norman is not the only reason to stop. HM03 Surf is given here once you clear his gym, the move that opens half the map, and a Max Revive and a Rare Candy make the visit worthwhile.

TRAINERS
Norman, the Petalburg gym leader and your own father, fronts a Slaking that only attacks every other turn thanks to Truant. A Fighting move and a little patience topple his Normal-types near level 31.

Petalburg City Guide
Towns have no walkable grass, so the only wild Pokemon are out on the water. Surf or fish along a town's edge and you can pull Wingull, Tentacool, or Magikarp. A few towns hand you a Pokemon outright instead, like your starter in Littleroot and a Beldum at Steven's house in Mossdeep.
Lilycove tops the list, with the only full Department Store and the ferry that runs out to the Battle Frontier once you're Champion. Mossdeep hands you a free Beldum and fields a two-leader gym, and Slateport's market and shipyard keep pulling you back for story beats.
