How to Get Kingdra in Emerald
Kingdra is reachable without a transfer, unusual for this stretch. Hook a Horsea on the Super Rod, raise it to Seadra, then trade it holding a Dragon Scale, and the sea dragon caps a fully in-game line.
Wild Kingdra may be holding when caught:
Catch Horsea at any of these 4 spots to eventually evolve into Kingdra.
Encountered via fishing with a Rod

How to Get Shiny Kingdra in Emerald
Kingdra sits behind a fishing hunt, so reel a shiny Horsea with the Super Rod along Route 134, evolve it into Seadra, then trade it holding a Dragon Scale, since the shine carries through the link-cable evolution. Compare Shiny Kingdra odds across every game

2 MethodsBoth methods here share the same odds, about 1 in 8,192 on each try. Pick whichever fits how you play.
Full Odds: Walk through grass, surf, or fish. Every encounter is its own independent shiny roll.
Breeding: Hatch eggs of this line; each egg rolls at the base shiny rate (no Masuda before Gen IV).
How many you have done, or plan to do.
| Chance | Encounters | Time |
|---|---|---|
| 10%lucky few | 864-- | -- |
| 25%one in four | 2,357-- | -- |
| 50%coin flip | 5,678-- | -- |
| 90%very likely | 18,862-- | -- |
Time assumes -- at your pace and does not change your shiny odds.
How is this calculated?
Every encounter has the same shiny chance, the Shiny Odds Per Try shown above. Each one is a separate roll that does not care how many you have already done, so the more you hunt, the higher your overall chance of at least one shiny. The formula below turns your odds and your number of tries into that combined chance.
chance after N tries = 1 − (1 − p)^N, where p = 1 / odds per try
Example at 1 in 8,192 (classic full odds): about 864 encounters for a 10 percent chance, 5,678 for 50 percent, and 18,862 for 90 percent.
The table above flips that around: it shows how many encounters it takes to reach a 10, 25, 50, and 90 percent chance at your current odds. Turning on boosts like the Shiny Charm, sandwiches, or chains improves your odds, so the encounter numbers drop.
These are estimates, not promises. Most games have no pity counter, meaning no guaranteed shiny no matter how many you hunt, so even Very Likely is not guaranteed: some hunters find one early, others go well past that point.

| 0.5x (Resist) | Steel |
| 0.25x (Resist) | Fire, Water |

ExcellentKingdra Evolutions
Kingdra evolved from Horsea's chain using a trade. It's a non-standard trigger, so check the details below. Breed this form to get Horsea eggs (average hatch time). E Kingdra Best Moveset
Water/Dragon typing leaves only Dragon as a weakness, and AbilitySwift Swim in rain doubles Kingdra's Speed to outrun everything on the field. The moveset becomes devastating on rain teams where special Water TermStab hits everything that Dragon misses.

Kingdra Emerald Guide
Kingdra is obtained by trade-evolving Seadra. Catch or evolve a Seadra first, then trade. Trade needs a Game Boy Advance link cable and a second GBA running another Gen 3 game (FireRed, LeafGreen, Ruby, Sapphire, or Emerald). Trade Seadra to a friend, then have them trade it back. The 2026 Switch re-release supports the same trade through local wireless on the Pokemon Center 2F Wireless Club, with no cables required. The Dragon Scale must be held during the trade. Bring one over from a sibling Gen 3 game if needed.
In Emerald, Kingdra plays as a balanced. Speed is middling, so pick your spots carefully. Surf is the primary attack.
In Emerald, Modest is the go-to nature for Kingdra. That's +Sp. Atk / -Attack. Pair it with 104 HP / 252 SpA / 152 Spe EVs. Fits the balanced role.
Game Availability
Since Gold & Silver, Kingdra has been in 17 games. Requiring a trade evolution to obtain means it's consistently available but requires more effort than simply catching it in the wild.
