Is Kingdra Good in Ruby & Sapphire Playthrough?
Trade Seadra with Dragon Scale, plus import from FRLG. AbilitySwift Swim doubles Speed in rain. Under Kyogre's AbilityDrizzle in Sapphire, Kingdra becomes one of the fastest and hardest-hitting Water/Dragon attackers. Two trade barriers but the rain payoff is enormous.
Horsea resists most of Roxanne's coverage and hits back hard.

How to Get Kingdra in Ruby & Sapphire
Kingdra finishes the Horsea line through a trade: hand off a Seadra holding a Dragon Scale. Horsea is catchable in Hoenn and Seadra comes by leveling, so only that last trade happens off-region.
Wild Kingdra may be holding when caught:
Catch Horsea at any of these 3 spots to eventually evolve into Kingdra.

How to Get Shiny Kingdra in Ruby & Sapphire
Kingdra begins in the breeding pen, since it never appears wild; hatch its family for a shiny, raise the Seadra, and evolve it by trading while it holds a Dragon Scale. Compare Shiny Kingdra odds across every game
Ruby & Sapphire Shiny Kingdra Calculator
2 MethodsBoth methods here share the same odds, about 1 in 8,192 on each try. Pick whichever fits how you play.
Full Odds: Walk through grass, surf, or fish. Every encounter is its own independent shiny roll.
Breeding: Hatch eggs of this line; each egg rolls at the base shiny rate (no Masuda before Gen IV).
How many you have done, or plan to do.
| Chance | Encounters | Time |
|---|---|---|
| 10%lucky few | 864-- | -- |
| 25%one in four | 2,357-- | -- |
| 50%coin flip | 5,678-- | -- |
| 90%very likely | 18,862-- | -- |
Time assumes -- at your pace and does not change your shiny odds.
How is this calculated?
Every encounter has the same shiny chance, the Shiny Odds Per Try shown above. Each one is a separate roll that does not care how many you have already done, so the more you hunt, the higher your overall chance of at least one shiny. The formula below turns your odds and your number of tries into that combined chance.
chance after N tries = 1 − (1 − p)^N, where p = 1 / odds per try
Example at 1 in 8,192 (classic full odds): about 864 encounters for a 10 percent chance, 5,678 for 50 percent, and 18,862 for 90 percent.
The table above flips that around: it shows how many encounters it takes to reach a 10, 25, 50, and 90 percent chance at your current odds. Turning on boosts like the Shiny Charm, sandwiches, or chains improves your odds, so the encounter numbers drop.
These are estimates, not promises. Most games have no pity counter, meaning no guaranteed shiny no matter how many you hunt, so even Very Likely is not guaranteed: some hunters find one early, others go well past that point.

| 0.5x (Resist) | Steel |
| 0.25x (Resist) | Fire, Water |
- Dark and Steel types added — Fairy does not exist yet

KINGDRA lives at extreme ocean depths that are otherwise uninhabited. It has long been believed that the yawning of this POKéMON creates spiraling ocean currents.
KINGDRA sleeps on the seafloor where it is otherwise devoid of life. When a storm arrives, the POKéMON is said to awaken and wander about in search of prey.
Kingdra Ruby & Sapphire Guide
Kingdra is obtained by trade-evolving Seadra. Catch or evolve a Seadra first, then trade. Trade needs a Game Boy Advance link cable and a second GBA running another Gen 3 game (FireRed, LeafGreen, Ruby, Sapphire, or Emerald). Trade Seadra to a friend, then have them trade it back. The 2026 Switch re-release supports the same trade through local wireless on the Pokemon Center 2F Wireless Club, with no cables required. The Dragon Scale must be held during the trade. Bring one over from a sibling Gen 3 game if needed.
Game Availability
Since Gold & Silver, Kingdra has been in 17 games. Requiring a trade evolution to obtain means it's consistently available but requires more effort than simply catching it in the wild.
