Is Latias Good in Ruby & Sapphire Playthrough?
Roaming Hoenn in Sapphire after the E4. Dragon/Psychic with AbilityLevitate for Ground immunity. Latias is faster and bulkier on the special side than most available options. The roaming catch is frustrating but the Dragon/Psychic coverage with Levitate makes Latias one of the strongest postgame catches.

In Sapphire, Latias roams the region at level 40 once you beat the Elite Four, drifting between routes. Ruby players instead reach it at level 50 on Southern Island, gated behind the Eon Ticket event item.

How to Get Shiny Latias in Ruby & Sapphire
Latias starts roaming Hoenn in Sapphire after you become Champion, and its shininess is fixed the moment it is released, so save before that point and reset until it turns up shiny. Compare Shiny Latias odds across every game
Southern Island: static Latias via Eon Ticket event (Ruby). Lv50, holds Soul Dew. Uses CreateScriptedWildMon (otIdType=0), NOT roamer struct — no IV bug. 1/8192 shiny odds, soft-resettable. Island cannot be revisited after leaving in R/S.

Full Odds: Walk through grass, surf, or fish. Every encounter is its own independent shiny roll.
Soft Reset: Save in front of a static, gift, or legendary encounter, then reset until it sparkles.

| 50%coin flip | 5,678-- | -- |
| 90%very likely | 18,862-- | -- |
Time assumes -- at your pace and does not change your shiny odds.
How is this calculated?
Every encounter has the same shiny chance, the Shiny Odds Per Try shown above. Each one is a separate roll that does not care how many you have already done, so the more you hunt, the higher your overall chance of at least one shiny. The formula below turns your odds and your number of tries into that combined chance.
chance after N tries = 1 − (1 − p)^N, where p = 1 / odds per try
Example at 1 in 8,192 (classic full odds): about 864 encounters for a 10 percent chance, 5,678 for 50 percent, and 18,862 for 90 percent.
The table above flips that around: it shows how many encounters it takes to reach a 10, 25, 50, and 90 percent chance at your current odds. Turning on boosts like the Shiny Charm, sandwiches, or chains improves your odds, so the encounter numbers drop.
These are estimates, not promises. Most games have no pity counter, meaning no guaranteed shiny no matter how many you hunt, so even Very Likely is not guaranteed: some hunters find one early, others go well past that point.

Latias Weakness
Latias is weak to Ice, Bug, Ghost, Dragon, and Dark. It resists 6 types, so it can switch into a lot of moves safely. Levitate grants an additional Ground immunity, reshaping the matchup chart. Latias's special bulk (base 130 Sp.Def) helps absorb special-type weaknesses, though physical moves exploit the lower Defense.
| Damage | Types |
|---|---|
| 2x (Weak) | Ice, Bug, Ghost, Dragon, Dark |
| 0.5x (Resist) | Fire, Water, Electric, Grass, Fighting, Psychic |
- Dark and Steel types added — Fairy does not exist yet
- Moves are Physical or Special based on type, not per move
