Is Latios Good in Ruby & Sapphire Playthrough?
Roaming Hoenn in Ruby after the E4. Dragon/Psychic with AbilityLevitate. Latios hits harder than Latias on the Special side. The roaming mechanic makes catching it a project, but the payoff is one of the fastest and strongest Dragon-types in Gen 3. Ruby's marquee postgame legendary.

Ruby & Sapphire Latios Locations
Ruby is where Latios becomes the post-Champion roamer, drifting the region at level 40 with a brutal catch rate. Sapphire instead parks it on Southern Island at level 50, reachable only through the Eon Ticket event.

How to Get Shiny Latios in Ruby & Sapphire
Latios begins roaming Hoenn in Ruby once you enter the Hall of Fame, and its shiny state locks the instant it is released, so save beforehand and reset until the roamer first appears shiny. Compare Shiny Latios odds across every game
Southern Island: static Latios via Eon Ticket event (Sapphire). Lv50, holds Soul Dew. Uses CreateScriptedWildMon (otIdType=0), NOT roamer struct — no IV bug. 1/8192 shiny odds, soft-resettable. Island cannot be revisited after leaving in R/S.

Full Odds: Walk through grass, surf, or fish. Every encounter is its own independent shiny roll.

| 50%coin flip | 5,678-- | -- |
| 90%very likely | 18,862-- | -- |
Time assumes -- at your pace and does not change your shiny odds.
How is this calculated?
Every encounter has the same shiny chance, the Shiny Odds Per Try shown above. Each one is a separate roll that does not care how many you have already done, so the more you hunt, the higher your overall chance of at least one shiny. The formula below turns your odds and your number of tries into that combined chance.
chance after N tries = 1 − (1 − p)^N, where p = 1 / odds per try
Example at 1 in 8,192 (classic full odds): about 864 encounters for a 10 percent chance, 5,678 for 50 percent, and 18,862 for 90 percent.
The table above flips that around: it shows how many encounters it takes to reach a 10, 25, 50, and 90 percent chance at your current odds. Turning on boosts like the Shiny Charm, sandwiches, or chains improves your odds, so the encounter numbers drop.
These are estimates, not promises. Most games have no pity counter, meaning no guaranteed shiny no matter how many you hunt, so even Very Likely is not guaranteed: some hunters find one early, others go well past that point.

Latios Weakness
Ice, Bug, Ghost, Dragon, and Dark moves hit Latios for super-effective damage. 6 resistances give it solid defensive coverage on top of that. Levitate grants an additional Ground immunity, reshaping the matchup chart. Latios's special bulk (base 110 Sp.Def) helps absorb special-type weaknesses, though physical moves exploit the lower Defense.
| Damage | Types |
|---|---|
| 2x (Weak) | Ice, Bug, Ghost, Dragon, Dark |
| 0.5x (Resist) | Fire, Water, Electric, Grass, Fighting, Psychic |
- Dark and Steel types added — Fairy does not exist yet
