Ruby & Sapphire Route 101

The short strip of grass where it all begins. Professor Birch is cornered by a wild Poochyena, and you grab a Poke Ball from his bag, Treecko, Torchic, or Mudkip, to bail him out.

Route 101 is in Hoenn. In the story you arrive from Littleroot Town to the south and continue north to Oldale Town.

Pokemon Encounters

The starter handoff (Treecko, Torchic, or Mudkip) happens on Route 101, and it is the only Pokemon here worth keeping. The wild grass holds nothing but Poochyena, Zigzagoon, and Wurmple at level 2 to 3, fine fodder for your first catches.

Route 101 Guide

  • Several routes do. Ruby drops Seedot and Zangoose into slots where Sapphire gives you Lotad and Seviper, and the caves split Mawile against Sableye. Check the version column before you spend an hour hunting something your copy can't catch. The rest of the species are shared.

  • Reach for the Super Rod on most routes, but two of Hoenn's prize catches ignore rods altogether. Feebas only bites on six hidden tiles of Route 119, and Relicanth comes from diving the seaweed off Routes 124 and 126, not from any rod. For the rest, the Super Rod pulls the deep-water species the Old and Good Rods can't reach.
