How to Get Seadra in Emerald
Seadra has no wild presence in Emerald. Hook a Horsea on the southern Super Rod routes, then raise it to level 32. A traded Dragon Scale later points the line toward Kingdra.
Wild Seadra may be holding when caught:
Catch Horsea at any of these 4 spots to eventually evolve into Seadra.
Encountered via fishing with a Rod
How to Obtain Seadra in E
The path to Seadra starts with Horsea at Lv. 25-30 via fishing and trade encounters. 1 catchable stage total, with locations listed for each one below.
How to Get Shiny Seadra in Emerald
Seadra doesn't take the hook itself, so Super Rod a shiny Horsea off Route 132 to Route 134 and level it to 32; the shine carries straight through the evolution. Compare Shiny Seadra odds across every game
Emerald Shiny Seadra Calculator
2 MethodsBoth methods here share the same odds, about 1 in 8,192 on each try. Pick whichever fits how you play.
Full Odds: Walk through grass, surf, or fish. Every encounter is its own independent shiny roll.
Breeding: Hatch eggs of this line; each egg rolls at the base shiny rate (no Masuda before Gen IV).
How many you have done, or plan to do.
| Chance | Encounters | Time |
|---|---|---|
| 10%lucky few | 864-- | -- |
| 25%one in four | 2,357-- | -- |
| 50%coin flip | 5,678-- | -- |
| 90%very likely | 18,862-- | -- |
Time assumes -- at your pace and does not change your shiny odds.
How is this calculated?
Every encounter has the same shiny chance, the Shiny Odds Per Try shown above. Each one is a separate roll that does not care how many you have already done, so the more you hunt, the higher your overall chance of at least one shiny. The formula below turns your odds and your number of tries into that combined chance.
chance after N tries = 1 − (1 − p)^N, where p = 1 / odds per try
Example at 1 in 8,192 (classic full odds): about 864 encounters for a 10 percent chance, 5,678 for 50 percent, and 18,862 for 90 percent.
The table above flips that around: it shows how many encounters it takes to reach a 10, 25, 50, and 90 percent chance at your current odds. Turning on boosts like the Shiny Charm, sandwiches, or chains improves your odds, so the encounter numbers drop.
These are estimates, not promises. Most games have no pity counter, meaning no guaranteed shiny no matter how many you hunt, so even Very Likely is not guaranteed: some hunters find one early, others go well past that point.

Seadra Weakness
Electric and Grass moves hit Seadra for super-effective damage. It resists 4 types, giving it decent defensive coverage. Seadra's physical bulk (base 95 Def) helps cushion physical weakness hits, but special attackers are the bigger threat.
| Damage | Types |
|---|---|
| 2x (Weak) | Electric, Grass |
| 0.5x (Resist) | Fire, Water, Ice, Steel |
- Dark and Steel types added — Fairy does not exist yet
- Moves are Physical or Special based on type, not per move

Seadra Evolutions
Seadra is partway through a three-stage line between Horsea and Kingdra. The chain involves a trade, so it's not a straightforward grind. So far, HP got the biggest boost (+25 from Horsea). The final form adds another 100 stats on top. View every chain in the Evolution Chart.

Seadra Emerald Guide
No. Seadra only evolves into Kingdra through a real trade. There is no in-game alternative in Emerald. Trade needs a Game Boy Advance link cable and a second GBA running another Gen 3 game (FireRed, LeafGreen, Ruby, Sapphire, or Emerald). Trade Seadra to a friend, then have them trade it back. The 2026 Switch re-release supports the same trade through local wireless on the Pokemon Center 2F Wireless Club, with no cables required. The Dragon Scale must be held during the trade. Bring one over from a sibling Gen 3 game if needed.
In Emerald, Seadra does the job early-game if you need a Water type on your team. Evolve it into Kingdra before the later gyms and it holds up fine through the story.
In Emerald, use Seadra as a balanced. Special attacks are the main output. Speed is middling, Surf is the primary attack.
For Emerald, run Modest on Seadra. +Sp. Atk is what matters, and the -Attack cut doesn't hurt this set. Fits the balanced role.
For Emerald, build your team around Haunter, Flareon, and Hitmonchan. These have the highest co-usage rates with Seadra in competitive formats. They cover each other's weaknesses.
Game Availability
Seadra has been part of the series since Red & Blue, appearing in 20 titles across all 9 generations. As a Gen 1 original, it's one of the most consistently available Pokemon in the franchise.
