While most trainers evolve Seadra into Kingdra immediately, the unevolved form has a niche with Eviolite boosting its defenses. Only weak to Electric and Grass. Sits at a decent but contested Speed tier. Known as the Dragon Pokemon.

Seadra's built around special offense. Defense leads the charge, Sp. Def pays for it. Moderately hard to find, worth 2 Defense and Sp. Atk EVs. Follows a medium-fast 1M XP curve.

It’s the males that raise the offspring. While Seadra are raising young, the spines on their backs secrete thicker and stronger poison.

Sword

Seadra’s mouth is slender, but its suction power is strong. In an instant, Seadra can suck in food that’s larger than the opening of its mouth.

Shield

Seadra Weakness

Good

Electric and Grass-type moves hit Seadra for super-effective damage. It resists 4 types, giving it decent defensive coverage. Seadra's physical bulk (base 95 Def) helps cushion physical weakness hits, but special attackers are the bigger threat.

Seadra is partway through a three-stage line between Horsea and Kingdra. The chain involves a trade, so it's not a straightforward grind. So far, HP got the biggest boost (+25 from Horsea). The final form adds another 100 stats on top.

Best Build

Without breeding, Seadra misses out on Aurora Beam and Clear Smog. That's 7 egg moves adding depth that the base kit lacks. STAB comes from Hydro Pump and Muddy Water, with Dragon and Ice coverage and more rounding things out.

Seadra doesn't appear wild. Catch Horsea instead, it shows up at decent rates. Evolve it at level 32 to get Seadra. The 2-stage line is mapped in the step cards below.

How to Obtain Seadra in Sword & Shield

To get Seadra, start by catching Horsea through surfing encounters at Lv. 40-45. The chain covers 1 catchable stage before reaching the final form.

  2. Seadra
    Step 2Seadra
  • Seadra isn't fully evolved, so it's not built for competitive play. You'll want to evolve it into Kingdra to unlock its full potential. At 440 BST, it's a stepping stone rather than a team anchor.

  • Watch for Raikou (Electric) and Venusaur (Grass) when using Seadra. They all hit it super-effectively with STAB. Only 2 weaknesses means fewer dedicated counters to worry about.

  • Horsea evolves into Seadra at level 32. Seadra evolves into Kingdra while holding a Dragon Scale. Seadra is a middle-stage evolution in the Horsea line.

  • Poison Point has a 30% chance of poisoning attacking Pokémon on contact — that's the one you want on Seadra. Damp is the hidden ability. Niche, but it has its uses. Sniper works too if your team needs something different.

  • Seadra fills the balanced role. It's a special attacker with base 95 Sp. Atk. Base 85 Speed is workable — faster than some, slower than many.

  • Seadra appears in 20 games, including Yellow, Red & Blue, and Gold & Silver.

Seadra has been part of the series since Red & Blue, appearing in 20 titles across all 9 generations. As a Gen 1 original, it's one of the most consistently available Pokemon in the franchise.
