While most trainers evolve Seadra into Kingdra immediately, the unevolved form has a niche with Eviolite boosting its defenses. Only weak to Electric and Grass. Sits at a decent but contested Speed tier. Known as the Dragon Pokemon.
Seadra's built around special offense. Defense leads the charge, Sp. Def pays for it. Moderately hard to find, worth 2 Defense and Sp. Atk EVs. Follows a medium-fast 1M XP curve.
Touching the back fin causes numbness. It hooks its tail to coral to stay in place while sleeping.
Seadra Weakness
AvgElectric and Grass-type moves hit Seadra for super-effective damage. Its Water typing keeps the defensive matchups simple. Seadra's physical bulk (base 95 Def) helps cushion physical weakness hits, but special attackers are the bigger threat.
- Only 15 types exist — Dark, Steel, and Fairy are absent
- Ghost has no effect on Psychic (a known bug, fixed in Gen II)
- Special stat governs both offense and defense — no Sp.Atk / Sp.Def split
Partway through Horsea's chain, Seadra is a Water type pushing toward Kingdra. No breeding at this stage. So far, HP got the biggest boost (+25 from Horsea). The final form adds another 100 stats on top.
How to Evolve
Start with flexible EVs EVs. A nature nature gives Seadra the right balanced lean, an item adds extra utility, and an ability works in the background. Surf is the main damage option.

Without TMs, Seadra's movepool is bare bones. With them, you get Normal and Ice coverage on top of Hydro Pump and Surf for STAB. The natural kit handles basics, but TMs are doing the real work.

Seadra is available from mid-game fishing spots onward at high spawn rates. 2 encounter spots give you plenty of options. Grab one early and it'll be ready to evolve or train by mid-game.

Seadra isn't fully evolved, so it's not built for competitive play. You'll want to evolve it into Kingdra to unlock its full potential. At 440 BST, it's a stepping stone rather than a team anchor.
Seadra fills the balanced role. It's a special attacker with base 95 Sp. Atk. Base 85 Speed is workable — faster than some, slower than many.
Seadra appears in 20 games, including Yellow, Red & Blue, and Gold & Silver.
Seadra has been part of the series since Red & Blue, appearing in 20 titles across all 9 generations. As a Gen 1 original, it's one of the most consistently available Pokemon in the franchise.
