HeartGold & SoulSilver Ilex Forest

A dim, twisting wood west of Azalea blocks the only road on until you herd a charcoal maker's stray Farfetch'd back through it. Deep inside stands the quiet shrine tied to Celebi.

Ilex Forest is in Johto, with Azalea Town to the south. In the story it comes after Slowpoke Well and continues north to Route 34.

ILEX FOREST MAP

Ilex Forest coils into a tight loop around a single pond, its Goldenrod-side exit sealed by one tree until Cut takes it down.

Ilex Forest opens on a herding job: the charcoal maker's two Farfetch'd turn toward any twig pile you step on, so you catch them from behind.
  1. North of the Azalea gate, a worried apprentice beside a lone small tree stops you and asks you to bring both birds back.
  2. For the first bird just east of him, step on the twigs south of it, then come down on its back from the north.
  3. Keep off the twig pile to its east, which turns the bird and spoils the approach.
2
Each catch drops you back beside the apprentice, and the second bird waits deeper in the woods to the east.
  1. Talk to it from below so it bolts east, step on the twigs east of its new spot, then reach it from the west.
  2. After the second catch, the charcoal maker walks up and hands you HM01 CutTMHM01 CutNormalClassPhysicalPower50Accuracy95%PP30The foe is cut with a scythe or a claw. Which bug line you find depends on the cartridge: HeartGold grows the Caterpie line, SoulSilver the Weedle line, both easy fodder that evolve fast. Oddish blankets the night at 60 percent, and the radio can summon Budew, Carnivine, Numel, or Spoink, oddities from other regions in this old wood.
