Johto creatures have wandered south into the grass on this short, quiet stroll between Pallet Town and Viridian City.
Route 1 is in Kanto. In the story you arrive from Viridian City to the north and continue south to Pallet Town.

Route 1 leaves Viridian City with two School Kids posted in the grass, and you meet them as the lower of the walk's two level rungs.
- Meet School Kid Sherman first, furthest north on the route, where he opens with Furret before switching to Pidgeot.
- School Kid Danny waits south and west of Sherman with Jynx, Electabuzz and Magmar, the longest roster on Route 1.
- The two watch opposite ways, Sherman looking east and Danny west, so neither of them covers the other's ground.
- Rattata turns up in either time band, sharing the daylight grass with Pidgey and Sentret and the night with Hoothoot.

The lower half of the walk belongs to a pair of Ace Trainers whose teams sit a rung above anything you have fought here.

- Take Ace Trainer French first of the two, and expect Absol and Alakazam from the route's highest-level fight.
- Ace Trainer Quinn closes the pair further south with Ivysaur and Starmie, both of them facing down the route rather than across it.
- Head south past that last fight and finish the walk in Pallet Town.
