Gold & Silver Ilex Forest

Just west of Azalea lies a dim, maze-like wood. Herd a charcoal maker's runaway Farfetch'd back to him and he rewards you with HM Cut.

Ilex Forest is in Johto, with Azalea Town to the south. In the story it comes after Slowpoke Well and continues north to Route 34.

ILEX FOREST MAP

Cut the tree blocking the south path and Ilex Forest opens toward Goldenrod, a small maze wrapped around a central pond. Without Cut there is no way out the far side.

Pokemon Encounters

Oddish hides in the grass at night while Paras skitters through by day. Caterpie and Weedle hang from the branches, and a Psyduck or two paddle the pond once Surf is on hand.

Herd the Charcoal Kiln owner's Farfetch'd through the trees and you earn HM01 Cut, needed to clear the small tree blocking the forest exit. A man here also hands over TM02 Headbutt, the move that knocks Pokemon out of trees.

Ilex Forest Guide

  • You sort out the lost Farfetch'd first. A charcoal maker's Farfetch'd is loose in the trees, and herding it back from the right angle earns you Cut, the move that clears the bushes blocking the way out. Bring patience for the chase, since approaching from the wrong side just spooks it off.

  • It's the only way to find a few Pokemon. A man in the forest teaches you Headbutt, and slamming it into the right trees shakes wild Pokemon loose. Ilex Forest's trees give the Caterpie or Weedle line plus Exeggcute, while Heracross is a Headbutt find on the rocky outdoor routes like 42 to 46, and Headbutt is the only way to catch it in Gold and Silver. Keep it on a party member for the routes ahead too.
