What happened to Cinnabar Island in Gold and Silver?

A volcanic eruption leveled it between generations. The town that held Blaine's Gym and the Pokemon Lab back in Red and Blue is mostly rubble now, with just a lone Pokemon Center left standing on the water offshore. Blaine relocated his Fire Gym to the Seafoam Islands, so there's no badge to win on Cinnabar anymore.

Gold & Silver Cinnabar Island

Once a fiery research island, now blasted to bare rock by the volcano. Only a lone Pokemon Center still stands where the gym used to be. Blaine took his fire gym out to the Seafoam Islands.

Cinnabar Island is in Kanto. In the story you arrive from Route 21 to the north and continue east to Route 20.
