Gold & Silver Vermilion City
Lt. Surge runs the electric gym in this busy southern port. At the city's eastern edge a giant Snorlax sleeps across the road, deaf to the world. Only the Poke Flute will rouse it.
Vermilion City is in Kanto, with Route 11 to the east. In the story you arrive from S.S. Aqua to the south and continue north to Route 6.

Pokemon Encounters
The Snorlax blocking the path near Diglett's Cave sleeps at level 50 and wakes only to the Poke Flute. It is a one-time catch, so save a Great Ball or two. The harbor otherwise gives up Tentacool, Staryu, and a Super Rod Lanturn.

Vermilion City Guide
Sixteen, double the usual eight. You clear Johto's eight Gyms first, then sail to Kanto after the Elite Four for eight more. Kanto's lineup shifted in the years since Red and Blue: Janine took over the Fuchsia Gym from her father Koga, and Blue, the old Kanto rival, now runs the Viridian Gym.
They do, thanks to the game's internal clock. Goldenrod's haircut brothers raise a Pokemon's friendship on a set schedule, some shops stock special goods only on certain days, and a few people hand out a different gift each day. Check what day it is before you write a town off as finished.
