What do I need to get through the Ice Path in Gold and Silver?

Strength, mostly. The floors mix slippery ice you slide across until something stops you with boulder puzzles you have to shove aside, so a Pokemon that knows Strength is the key tool. The cave also hides the Waterfall HM you'll want for water routes, and it drops you out at Blackthorn City.

Gold & Silver Ice Path

Cracking floors and sliding boulders fill this frozen cavern on the way to Blackthorn. Solve its slippery puzzles to reach the dragons' city below.

Ice Path is in Johto, with Blackthorn City to the east. In the story you arrive from Route 44 to the west and it comes before Dark Cave.

ICE PATH MAP

Sheets of ice cover all four floors of the Ice Path, and you slide across each until something stops you. Strength shoves the boulders into the holes that open the way down to Blackthorn.

Pokemon Encounters

Swinub and Jynx slide across the ice as solid picks for the gym ahead, joined in Silver only by Delibird, the rare bird Gold players have to trade for.
