Crystal Mt. Mortar
Johto's largest cave is a sprawling maze where the black belt Kiyo waits in the deepest chamber, handing a Tyrogue to anyone who can beat him.
Mt. Mortar is in Johto. In the story you arrive from Route 42 to the south and it comes before Mahogany Town.
MT. MORTAR MAP
Mt. Mortar opens off Route 42 through three separate mouths into four connected chambers, lit in Crystal where Gold and Silver left it dark. You Surf its inner pools, climb a Waterfall, and clear boulders with Strength to reach the deepest room.
Pokemon Encounters
Mt. Mortar hands you a Tyrogue deep in its halls, the start of the Hitmon line. The caverns themselves run on Machop and Geodude, with Marill paddling the inner pools.

Mt. Mortar Guide
Mt. Mortar is the big change. Its halls were dark in Gold and Silver, but Crystal brightened them, so Flash is no longer needed to get through. Two caves still go pitch black, Dark Cave and Kanto's Rock Tunnel, and the move only works outdoors once you hold the Zephyr Badge.
