Crystal Route 40
Open water carries you south from Olivine to Cianwood, Corsola dotting the seabed beneath the waves.
Route 40 is in Johto, with Olivine City to the north and Route 41 to the south. In the story it comes after Olivine Lighthouse and continues north to Battle Tower.

Pokemon Encounters
Rock Smash is the reason to slow down on Route 40, the shoreline boulders hiding a Shuckle and the odd Krabby. The open water between Olivine and Cianwood is the usual Tentacool and Krabby otherwise.

Route 40 Guide
The north end of Route 40 holds the first Battle Tower in the series. Rather than wild Pokemon, it pits a team of your own against a run of trainers back to back, with no healing in between. Outside Japan it's open as soon as you can reach it, so nothing in the story gates it.
