The fastest Pokemon in Gen 1, Electrode can Explode as a last resort at C-Tier in Red & Blue, but its Special isn't enough to sweep.

Is Electrode Good in Red & Blue Playthrough?

The fastest Pokemon in Red and Blue. Nothing else comes close. Electrode always goes first and hits respectably on the special side. The problem is it doesn't hit hard enough to capitalize on that speed in most fights. Great for specific matchups, forgettable otherwise.

How to Get Electrode in Red & Blue

Three ways to one Electrode: uncommon in high-level Cerulean Cave, a Cinnabar trade for a Raichu, or just leveling a Voltorb to 30. That last option is what most players use.

Where To Catch Electrode in RB

Available earlier: catch Voltorb (before Badge 4) and evolve it at Lv 30. Wild Electrode first appears at Cinnabar Island (after Badge 6).

To plan your throws, open the Red & Blue catch rate calculator with Electrode preloaded.

Electrode Weakness

Ground moves hit Electrode for super-effective damage. Not many exploitable gaps in the Electric typing defensive chart. Electrode's Electric typing only leaves 1 gap to cover.

Moves List

The level-up pool is slim, so TMs matter here. Electrode's Normal coverage all comes from technical machines, built on top of Thunder and Thunderbolt for same-type damage. Self-Destruct and Explosion are the payoff moves.

Pokemon Red / Pokemon Blue

Electrode Red & Blue Guide

  • Electrode is a static encounter at Power Plant in Red & Blue. Electrode appears at level 43. Prerequisite: Disguised as an item ball in the Power Plant. Save before the encounter. These one-shot Pokemon don't respawn if you knock them out or run out of Poke Balls.

  • Trade a Raichu to the NPC on Cinnabar Island to receive Electrode.. This is an NPC trade, so the Electrode you receive is yours immediately, no transfer cable needed.

  • In Red & Blue, use Electrode as a pivot. Special attacks are the main output. It outspeeds most threats, Thunderbolt is the primary attack.

  • Electrode has a Hisuian form that swaps the typing and reshuffles the stats. Introduced in Gen 8. Worth checking if the original version doesn't fit your team.

Game Availability

Available since Red & Blue, Electrode appears in 20 games spanning 9 generations. Beyond its original form, it gained a Hisuian form in Generation 8.
