Red & Blue Route 24

Home to the Nugget Bridge just north of Cerulean City, a five-Trainer gauntlet that ends with a Team Rocket recruiter's pitch.

Route 24 is in Kanto. In the story you arrive from Cerulean City to the south and continue east to Route 25.

ROUTE 24 MAP

Heading north out of Cerulean City means crossing Nugget Bridge, one straight span with no way around it, onto the wooded cape past the far end.

Each contest trainer on the narrow Route 24 bridge stands on one side and watches the other, so no fight on the way up can be skipped.
  1. Leave Cerulean City by its north edge and start up the bridge, where a Bug CatcherBug Catcher₱140CaterpieLv 14WeedleLv 14Weak toFirePoisonFlyingRockPsychicBug battles you first and a Lass challenges you next.
  2. Keep climbing while a YoungsterYoungster₱210RattataLv 14EkansLv 14ZubatLv 14Weak toFightingGroundPsychicBugElectricIceRock battles you, a second Lass challenges you, and a Jr. Trainer fields his lone Mankey.
  3. The one square leading north off the bridge sits beside the Rocket; step on it and he pays out the Nugget, pitches Team RocketRocket₱450EkansLv 15ZubatLv 15Weak toGroundPsychicBugElectricIceRock, then battles you.
  4. If your bag has no free slot he cannot pay, steps you back south, and the way north stays closed until you make room.

A rock ledge rings the northwest plateau of Route 24, and a single opening is the only way up; from every other edge you can only hop down.
  1. Abra at 15% is the prize on Nugget Bridge, the start of a future Alakazam once you can trade it through. Early bugs and the same version grass as the nearby routes fill out the rest.

Route 24 Guide

  • Yes. Each version locks away a handful of route species. Ekans, Oddish, Mankey, and Growlithe stay in Red, while Sandshrew, Bellsprout, Meowth, and Vulpix belong to Blue, with Scyther and Pinsir split the same way. Trading with the other version is the only way to fill those gaps.

  • Three rods, three givers. A fisherman in Vermilion City hands over the Old Rod, which only ever hooks Magikarp. The Good Rod comes from a fishing fan in Fuchsia City and adds Poliwag, Goldeen, and other common catches. The Super Rod, waiting on Route 12, reaches the rod-only rarities listed here.
