Red & Blue Route 19

Surf first carries you onto open water just south of Fuchsia City, past endless schools of stinging Tentacool.

Route 19 is in Kanto, with Fuchsia City to the north. In the story it comes after Route 15 and continues west to Route 20.

ROUTE 19 MAP

Route 19 has dry ground only on the narrow sand below the Fuchsia City lane, where two Swimmers stand; past it the route is open water, so Surf straight down and it feeds into the run toward the Seafoam Islands.

Route 19 begins as a short strip of sand where two Swimmers stand looking west, and the only way on from there is across the water.
  1. Walk down the narrow lane from Fuchsia City, step west at its foot, and turn down to face the waiting Swimmer who blocks the lane.
  2. Farther west, a second Swimmer spots you if you walk down in front of him; the gap between the two reaches the water with no fight.
2
Beyond the sand, four Swimmers wait far apart and never turn, so where you swim decides which of them you fight.
  1. Face the water from the sand and use SurfMoveSurfWaterClassSpecialPower95Accuracy100%PP15A strong water-type attack., which needs the Fuchsia City gym badge.
  2. Just off the sand, a Swimmer battles you with two Horsea as you swim through the water below him.
  3. Keep down the middle until a Swimmer spots you from the east, then veer west, where the next Swimmer battles you.
  4. Cross back to the east side and swim down it, where a Swimmer fields Goldeen, Shellder and Seaking from just below you.
3
At the far end, four trainers float back to back, so whichever edge of the group you reach sets the order of your fights.
  1. Approach the group down the east side, where a Beauty challenges you with Goldeen and Seaking, then swim around the top to face the Swimmer with Tentacruel.
  2. Round the west edge, where a Beauty battles you with a team of five. Below the group, a Beauty challenges you with three Staryu; then head west into Route 20.

Pokemon Encounters

This is open water, so Surf turns the route into a wall of Tentacool at 100%. The Super Rod is the only way to vary the catch, landing Staryu, Horsea, and Shellder.

Route 19 Guide

  • Yes. Each version locks away a handful of route species. Ekans, Oddish, Mankey, and Growlithe stay in Red, while Sandshrew, Bellsprout, Meowth, and Vulpix belong to Blue, with Scyther and Pinsir split the same way. Trading with the other version is the only way to fill those gaps.

  • Three rods, three givers. A fisherman in Vermilion City hands over the Old Rod, which only ever hooks Magikarp. The Good Rod comes from a fishing fan in Fuchsia City and adds Poliwag, Goldeen, and other common catches. The Super Rod, waiting on Route 12, reaches the rod-only rarities listed here.
