Red & Blue Route 6

The tree-lined road down to the harbor at Vermilion City, with the southern mouth of the Underground Path tucked nearby.

Route 6 is in Kanto, with Saffron City to the north and the entrance to Underground Path 5-6. In the story it comes after Cerulean Gym and continues south to Vermilion City.

The stairs building drops you halfway down Route 6, and the gatehouse to the north sends you back until you bring its thirsty guard a drink.
  1. Head west from the stairs building into the tall grass, where a Bug Catcher spots you from the far west edge of the field.
  2. Near the middle of the field two trainers stand facing each other, and speaking to her starts a battle with the Jr. Trainer's Rattata and Pikachu.
  3. Talk to the young man beside her to face the Jr. Trainer with a lone Squirtle.

Heading south, you cannot slip past the two Jr. Trainers who watch the narrow lane at the bottom of the route from its east side.
  1. Follow the path south along the east side, where a Bug Catcher battles you from the east edge with his lone Butterfree.
  2. Where the path ends, turn west and walk south toward the lane, and a Jr. Trainer challenges you with three Pidgey.
  3. Right below her, another Jr. Trainer battles you with a Spearow and a Raticate.
  4. With both beaten, follow the narrow lane straight south into Vermilion City.

Pokemon Encounters

Red players meet Mankey on this road where Blue meets Meowth, over a shared base of grass Pokemon and Pidgey. The harbor water adds Krabby and Shellder on the rods.

Route 6 Guide

  • Yes. Each version locks away a handful of route species. Ekans, Oddish, Mankey, and Growlithe stay in Red, while Sandshrew, Bellsprout, Meowth, and Vulpix belong to Blue, with Scyther and Pinsir split the same way. Trading with the other version is the only way to fill those gaps.

  • Three rods, three givers. A fisherman in Vermilion City hands over the Old Rod, which only ever hooks Magikarp. The Good Rod comes from a fishing fan in Fuchsia City and adds Poliwag, Goldeen, and other common catches. The Super Rod, waiting on Route 12, reaches the rod-only rarities listed here.
