Red & Blue Route 5

The link between Cerulean and Saffron City, where the north entrance to the Underground Path tunnels beneath the gated metropolis.

Route 5 is in Kanto, with Cerulean City to the north and Saffron City to the south. In the story it comes after Route 25 and continues through its entrance to Underground Path 5-6.

Pokemon Encounters

Mankey marks the Red version here and Meowth the Blue, the first of Kanto's Fighting-or-Normal splits. The grass underneath splits the same way by game, with Pidgey the one constant across both.

Route 5 Guide

  • Yes. Each version locks away a handful of route species. Ekans, Oddish, Mankey, and Growlithe stay in Red, while Sandshrew, Bellsprout, Meowth, and Vulpix belong to Blue, with Scyther and Pinsir split the same way. Trading with the other version is the only way to fill those gaps.

  • Three rods, three givers. A fisherman in Vermilion City hands over the Old Rod, which only ever hooks Magikarp. The Good Rod comes from a fishing fan in Fuchsia City and adds Poliwag, Goldeen, and other common catches. The Super Rod, waiting on Route 12, reaches the rod-only rarities listed here.
