MT. MOON MAP
The way down forks constantly, side passages peeling off the main path before it bottoms out two basements deep and exits toward Cerulean City. Most of the detours lead somewhere; the straight line just leaves.
Pokemon Encounters
Zubat swarms every floor and Geodude fills the gaps. The real hunt is Clefairy, stingy at 1% to 6%. This is the only place to find one for a long while, so pack patience.

TRAINERS
Bug Catchers and Hikers give way to the Team Rocket crew as you climb through Mt. Moon, nothing past level 16 but enough back-to-back fights to drain your supplies.
Mt. Moon Guide
Yes, and it's easy to walk past. A Moon Stone sits on the cave floor among the Rocket grunts, and it's the item that evolves Clefairy into Clefable plus Nidorina and Nidorino into Nidoqueen and Nidoking. No shop sells them, so grab every item ball you pass on the way down.
Rocket grunts and a pair of Super Nerds are digging for the fossils, so you battle through them to reach the choice at the back. A Super Nerd then offers the Dome Fossil or the Helix Fossil. Whichever you turn down is gone for that save, so trade later if you want both.
Rock Tunnel is the only one you can't see inside. Mt. Moon, the Seafoam Islands, Victory Road, and the Unknown Dungeon all light themselves, so Flash is just a convenience there. Claim HM05 Flash from Oak's Aide in the Route 2 gatehouse once you've caught ten different species.
Victory Road and the Seafoam Islands both gate progress behind it. Victory Road uses boulder-on-switch puzzles to open doors, while Seafoam needs you to shove boulders into holes to kill the water current. You earn HM04 Strength from the Safari Zone Warden after returning his Gold Teeth.
Worth it when you're only passing through. Repels turn off any encounter weaker than your lead Pokemon, which makes a high-level run through Golbat-infested Victory Road far quieter. Just pull the Repel back off when you actually want a rarity like Chansey or Clefairy to appear.
