Wild Jigglypuff first appear in the grass along this trainer-lined climb from Pewter City up to Mt. Moon.

Route 3 Walkthrough

Route 3's ledges only drop you south, so every shelf is reached through an open gap in a ledge row.
  1. Walk east from Pewter City along the lower lane to its walled end, where a Lass battles you with two Pidgey.
  2. Turn back to the gap and climb north, where the Bug Catcher at the top battles you with two Caterpie and a Weedle.
  3. On the shelf, a Youngster watching south battles you with Rattata and Ekans.
  4. Farther east the shelf pinches in, so face the Bug Catcher looking south or the Lass looking west along the top row.
2
Beneath that pinch sits a walled pocket, a side loop whose ledges only carry you back down to the lower lane.
  1. Hop off the shelf into the pocket, where the Youngster's lone Spearow battles you.
  2. Its ledges set you down by the lower lane, so climb the first gap again to the shelf.

The shelf's last Bug Catcher covers every way down to the grass, and past him you bend north at the route sign.
  1. Head east along the top row and drop south past the Bug Catcher facing east, who battles you with Caterpie and Metapod.
  2. Keep to the path along the top of the grass, where a Lass looking north battles you with her lone Jigglypuff.
  3. Climb the gap at the far end onto the final shelf, then hop south off its eastern end and carry on to the sign.
  4. Turn north at the sign and walk straight off the route into Route 4.

Pokemon Encounters

Spearow and Pidgey dominate the climb to Mt. Moon, nearly 90% of everything you meet. The one catch worth the detour is Jigglypuff at 10%, hard to find before this point.

Route 3 Guide

  • Yes. Each version locks away a handful of route species. Ekans, Oddish, Mankey, and Growlithe stay in Red, while Sandshrew, Bellsprout, Meowth, and Vulpix belong to Blue, with Scyther and Pinsir split the same way. Trading with the other version is the only way to fill those gaps.

  • Three rods, three givers. A fisherman in Vermilion City hands over the Old Rod, which only ever hooks Magikarp. The Good Rod comes from a fishing fan in Fuchsia City and adds Poliwag, Goldeen, and other common catches. The Super Rod, waiting on Route 12, reaches the rod-only rarities listed here.
