Every ledge on Route 3 only lets you hop down to the south, so each climb east starts at an open gap in a ledge row.
  1. Head east from Pewter City along the lower lane to its walled end, where a Lass battles you with her pair of Pidgey.
  2. Double back to the gap and climb north; the Bug Catcher beside it battles you as you step up.
  3. Cross the shelf, where a Youngster watching south battles you with Rattata and Ekans.
  4. Farther east the shelf narrows, so face the Bug Catcher looking south or the Lass looking west along the top row.

Below that narrow stretch lies a walled pocket, a side loop whose ledges only send you back toward Pewter City.
  1. Hop down the ledge into the pocket, where the Youngster's lone Spearow battles you.
  2. Its ledges drop you toward the lower lane, so climb the first gap again to rejoin the shelf.

The shelf's last Bug Catcher watches every way down to the grass, and beyond it the path turns north at the route sign.
  1. Walk east along the top row and step down past the Bug Catcher facing east, who battles you with Caterpie and Metapod.
  2. Follow the path along the top edge of the grass, where a Lass watching north battles you with her lone Jigglypuff.
  3. Climb the gap at the far end onto the last shelf, then drop off its eastern side and walk east to the sign.
  4. Turn north beside the sign and climb straight off the route into Route 4.

Mankey at 15 percent is the keeper here, an early Fighting-type to raise for the gyms ahead, sharing the grass with Sandshrew and Rattata while Spearow blankets more than half the encounters at levels 8 to 12.

Route 3 Guide

  • Trading is unavoidable. Yellow's wild tables quietly drop some Pokemon, and a few like Pikachu only come as gifts, never as wild catches. On top of that, evolutions like Alakazam, Machamp, Golem, and Gengar only finish over a link cable. You'll need a Red or Blue cart to round out the dex.

  • Cut and Surf open the most ground. Cut clears the small trees blocking shortcuts, and the S.S. Anne's captain teaches it. Surf carries you across the water routes like 19 and 20. Strength comes later for boulder puzzles in caves. Spread these onto a party member you don't mind using as your traveler.
