Yellow Route 4

The ledge-lined path down from Mt. Moon to Cerulean City, home to the salesman who peddles an overpriced Magikarp.

Route 4 is in Kanto, with Route 3 to the south. In the story you arrive from Mt. Moon to the west and continue east to Cerulean City.

Route 4 Walkthrough

Mt. Moon splits Route 4 in two, so the first visit here is only the short west half from Route 3 to the cave mouth.
  1. From Route 3, walk north across the open ground to the healing center beside the cave.
  2. Heal up there, then follow the foot of the hill to the cave mouth and enter Mt. Moon.
2
Out of the cave, one-way ledges steer you; the high strip above the pond waits until you can surf down the next city's west side.

Come back then and walk west along it until the LassLass₱465ParasLv 31ParasLv 31ParasectLv 31Weak to4×Fire4×Poison4×FlyingIceBugRock battles you.

  1. Go east from the cave, then north through the gap in the ledge row to pick up Route 4's hidden Great Ball near the Mt. Moon exit.
  2. Hop the ledges to the east, follow the lane south to the lower path and walk east to the next gap.
  3. Climb north through it, walk west under the ledge, then go north through the narrow gap to take the TM04 WhirlwindTMTM04 WhirlwindNormalClassStatusPower—Accuracy85%PP20Blows away the foe & ends battle.WhereOn Route 4 on Route 4.
  4. Head east along the upper path, hop down the ledges and walk east below the pond into Cerulean City.

Pokemon Encounters

The oddity here is the salesman peddling a single Magikarp at level 5, a famous waste of money that pays off as a Gyarados if you stick with it. The grass is the same Spearow, Mankey, and Sandshrew spread as the climb below.

Route 4 Guide

  • Trading is unavoidable. Yellow's wild tables quietly drop some Pokemon, and a few like Pikachu only come as gifts, never as wild catches. On top of that, evolutions like Alakazam, Machamp, Golem, and Gengar only finish over a link cable. You'll need a Red or Blue cart to round out the dex.

  • Cut and Surf open the most ground. Cut clears the small trees blocking shortcuts, and the S.S. Anne's captain teaches it. Surf carries you across the water routes like 19 and 20. Strength comes later for boulder puzzles in caves. Spread these onto a party member you don't mind using as your traveler.
