Yellow Route 11

East of Vermilion City, a wide grassland where Oak's aide rewards the Itemfinder near the mouth of Diglett's Cave.

Route 11 is in Kanto, with Route 12 to the east and Vermilion City to the west. In the story it comes after S.S. Anne and continues through its entrance to Diglett's Cave.

On Route 11 the main road runs clear end to end, so every trainer beside it is a fight you choose.
  1. From Vermilion City, follow the main road past the Diglett's Cave mouth, where a Youngster east of it battles you with a lone Ekans.
  2. South of the road, a Gambler in the southwest corner fights you with Poliwag and Horsea, and a Youngster farther east challenges you with Nidoran M and Nidorino.
  3. North of the road, a Youngster battles you with Sandshrew and Zubat, and a Gambler beyond him fights you with Growlithe and Vulpix.
2
You can slip past every trainer here except the Gambler standing just above the lane into the gatehouse.
  1. A Gambler just south of the road battles you with Bellsprout and Oddish, and the Engineer farther east challenges you with a lone Magnemite.
  2. Near the gatehouse a Youngster up north fights you with two Rattata and a Raticate, and a southeast Engineer battles you with two Magnemite and a Magneton.
  3. Search the tree north of the gate building for a hidden Escape Rope, then walk under the Gambler, who battles you with Voltorb and Magnemite.

Climb the stairs to Route 11 Gate 2F, because a sleeping Pokemon blocks the road past the gatehouse's east door until a later visit.
  1. Upstairs in the gate building, Oak's aide gives you the Itemfinder once you have caught 30 Pokemon.
  2. Talk to the Youngster pacing the same room to trade your Lickitung for his Dugtrio, then head back down and west to Diglett's Cave.

Pokemon Encounters

Drowzee patrols the grass at 24 percent, levels 15 to 19, and evolves into a Hypno that hits well above its weight this early. Rattata and Pidgey crowd the rest; a lone Raticate at 1 percent is the rarest sighting.

Route 11 Guide

  • Trading is unavoidable. Yellow's wild tables quietly drop some Pokemon, and a few like Pikachu only come as gifts, never as wild catches. On top of that, evolutions like Alakazam, Machamp, Golem, and Gengar only finish over a link cable. You'll need a Red or Blue cart to round out the dex.

  • Cut and Surf open the most ground. Cut clears the small trees blocking shortcuts, and the S.S. Anne's captain teaches it. Surf carries you across the water routes like 19 and 20. Strength comes later for boulder puzzles in caves. Spread these onto a party member you don't mind using as your traveler.
