Yellow Rock Tunnel

Pitch black without Flash, this winding cavern hides Onix and Geodude on the path toward Lavender Town.

Rock Tunnel is in Kanto, with Route 9 to the west. In the story you arrive from Route 10 to the south and it comes before Lavender Town.

ROCK TUNNEL MAP

Two unlit floors twist between the Route 10 entrance and the Lavender side, dark enough that Flash is essential to see at all. It is also the only land link between the two, with no way around it.

  5. On B1F, a Jr. Trainer challenges you with Jigglypuff, Pidgey and Meowth, then a Hiker battles you with two Geodude and a Graveler before the northwest ladder.

Pokemon Encounters

Onix is the eye-catching grab at 10 percent, a long Rock snake that walls early attackers. Machop shows at 10 to 20 percent for an early Fighting-type, and the dark fills the gaps with Geodude and Zubat, levels 14 to 22.

Rock Tunnel Guide

  • Onix shows up at about one in ten among the Zubat and Geodude, so expect to search. As a Rock and Ground type it ignores Pikachu's Electric moves entirely, a handy early catch when your starter keeps whiffing.

  • Save it for Rock Tunnel and skip it everywhere else. That's the one cave the game leaves unlit, and pushing through blind while Zubat swarm you is rough. No other cave is dark, so Flash is otherwise a wasted move slot. Grab HM05 from Oak's Aide and hand it to a benched Pokemon just before that descent.

  • There's only Victory Road. Cerulean Cave would be the other option, but it stays locked until you're Champion. Since you climb Victory Road on the way to the League anyway, a lap or two there doubles as a final tune-up.
