Rival Blue waits on Route 22 only between the parcel errand and your first badge, and the gatehouse guard turns you back without that badge.

Return after the Viridian City gym, when Rival Blue battles you again there.

  1. From Viridian City, walk west, go south down the sandy lane, then west to the patch of tall grass.
  2. Head north through the grass and the ledge gap, then west along the upper path, where Rival Blue battles you.
  3. Keep west to the end of the path, hop down the ledge beside the pond and cross the grass south to the lower path.
  4. Follow it west to the end, turn north, walk east above the fence and climb through the ledge gap to the gatehouse on the road to Route 23.

Route 22 Guide

  • Trading is unavoidable. Yellow's wild tables quietly drop some Pokemon, and a few like Pikachu only come as gifts, never as wild catches. On top of that, evolutions like Alakazam, Machamp, Golem, and Gengar only finish over a link cable. You'll need a Red or Blue cart to round out the dex.

  • Cut and Surf open the most ground. Cut clears the small trees blocking shortcuts, and the S.S. Anne's captain teaches it. Surf carries you across the water routes like 19 and 20. Strength comes later for boulder puzzles in caves. Spread these onto a party member you don't mind using as your traveler.
