Yellow Route 16

Just outside Celadon City at the top of Cycling Road, a slumbering Snorlax sprawls across the path and refuses to budge.

Route 16 is in Kanto, with Celadon City to the east. In the story it comes after Silph Co. and continues south to Route 17.

  2. Go west through the gatehouse upper passage, out its west door and on to the Fly House door in the northwest corner.

Only the Poke Flute moves the Snorlax, and the guard in the gatehouse lower passage lets you through only with a bike in your bag.
  1. Walk back east through the gatehouse, cut the tree again, since it grows back each time you return, and follow the road west.
  2. Stand just east of the Snorlax, play the Poke Flute and catch it, because it fights only once.
  3. Walk west through the lower passage and out the west door onto your bike, where a Biker battles you with Grimer and Koffing.
  4. A Cue Ball fights you from the west with two Machop and a Mankey, then another challenges you from below with Mankey and Machop.
  5. Keep west to face the Cue Ball's lone Machop and the Biker's lone Weezing, then the last Biker battles you with four Grimer before Route 17.

Doduo runs the grass at 40 percent, an early two-headed flyer that evolves into a fast Dodrio. The route's other draw is a second sleeping Snorlax at level 30, a backup if the Route 12 one got away. Spearow and Rattata fill the remaining slots.

Route 16 Guide

  • Trading is unavoidable. Yellow's wild tables quietly drop some Pokemon, and a few like Pikachu only come as gifts, never as wild catches. On top of that, evolutions like Alakazam, Machamp, Golem, and Gengar only finish over a link cable. You'll need a Red or Blue cart to round out the dex.

  • Cut and Surf open the most ground. Cut clears the small trees blocking shortcuts, and the S.S. Anne's captain teaches it. Surf carries you across the water routes like 19 and 20. Strength comes later for boulder puzzles in caves. Spread these onto a party member you don't mind using as your traveler.
