Yellow Route 6

The southern approach to Vermilion City, bordered by water where Psyduck paddle and Trainers wait among the grass.

Route 6 is in Kanto, with Saffron City to the north. In the story you arrive from Underground Path 5-6 through its entrance and continue south to Vermilion City.

You climb out of the stairs building mid-route, and the gatehouse to the north turns you back until its thirsty guard gets a drink.
  1. Wade west from the stairs building through the tall grass, where a Bug Catcher spots you from the far west edge.
  2. Back in the middle of the field a couple stands face to face, and talking to him starts a battle with the Jr. Trainer's lone Weepinbell.
  3. Talk to his partner next to face the Jr. Trainer with a lone Cubone.

Leaving Route 6 to the south means you must pass a narrow lane at the bottom that two Jr. Trainers watch from the east.
  1. Walk south down the path along the east side, where a Bug Catcher battles you from the east edge with his lone Butterfree.
  2. At the bottom of the path turn west and step south toward the lane, where a Jr. Trainer battles you with three Pidgey.
  3. One step lower, the Jr. Trainer below her challenges you with a Spearow and a Raticate.
  4. Past the pair, follow the narrow lane straight south into Vermilion City.

Pokemon Encounters

Surfing the roadside water turns up Psyduck almost every time, with an evolved Golduck at 5 percent, while on land you get the same Abra, Jigglypuff, and Pidgey seen approaching Saffron.

Route 6 Guide

  • Trading is unavoidable. Yellow's wild tables quietly drop some Pokemon, and a few like Pikachu only come as gifts, never as wild catches. On top of that, evolutions like Alakazam, Machamp, Golem, and Gengar only finish over a link cable. You'll need a Red or Blue cart to round out the dex.

  • Cut and Surf open the most ground. Cut clears the small trees blocking shortcuts, and the S.S. Anne's captain teaches it. Surf carries you across the water routes like 19 and 20. Strength comes later for boulder puzzles in caves. Spread these onto a party member you don't mind using as your traveler.
