Yellow Route 19

South of Fuchsia City, open water where Surf first carries Trainers out to sea past schools of stinging Tentacool.

Route 19 is in Kanto, with Fuchsia City to the north. In the story it comes after Route 15 and continues west to Route 20.

ROUTE 19 MAP

Most players first put Surf to use stepping off the Fuchsia City shore here, since the way south is solid water with nowhere to stand. From there it opens into the long southern sea route past Route 20.

Route 19 starts on dry sand, but the beach stops at the water's edge, and past that point only SurfMoveSurfWaterClassSpecialPower95Accuracy100%PP15A strong water-type attack. carries you farther.
  1. Walk south down the narrow lane from Fuchsia City, and halfway down a Swimmer standing on the sand spots you from the west.
  2. At the foot of the lane, step west across the sand until the second Swimmer battles you, then return to the water's edge.
2
Below the beach, four Swimmers float spread apart, each watching a single direction, so the line you swim decides your fights.
  1. Face the water at the foot of the beach and use SurfMoveSurfWaterClassSpecialPower95Accuracy100%PP15A strong water-type attack., which works only once you hold the badge from the Fuchsia City gym.
  2. Swim west just below the beach, where a Swimmer battles you with two Horsea as you cross the water in front of him.
  3. Head south down the middle, where a Swimmer spots you from the east, then cut west until the next Swimmer battles you.
  4. Swim back east and down that side, where a Swimmer fields Goldeen, Shellder and Seaking from just below you.
3
Far down the channel, four trainers float bunched together, each facing outward, so the side you approach picks your first opponent.
  1. Come down the east side of the group, where a Beauty challenges you with Goldeen and Seaking, then circle north to face the Swimmer with Tentacruel.
  2. Swim around the west and south sides to battle the Beauty with a team of five and the Beauty's three Staryu, then head west into Route 20.

Out past the Tentacool wall, the Super Rod is where this stretch gets interesting, hooking Staryu at 30 percent and an already-evolved Tentacruel at 10 percent. Levels reach into the 30s, so it doubles as sea training.

Route 19 Guide

  • Trading is unavoidable. Yellow's wild tables quietly drop some Pokemon, and a few like Pikachu only come as gifts, never as wild catches. On top of that, evolutions like Alakazam, Machamp, Golem, and Gengar only finish over a link cable. You'll need a Red or Blue cart to round out the dex.

  • Cut and Surf open the most ground. Cut clears the small trees blocking shortcuts, and the S.S. Anne's captain teaches it. Surf carries you across the water routes like 19 and 20. Strength comes later for boulder puzzles in caves. Spread these onto a party member you don't mind using as your traveler.
