Yellow Route 2

Flanking Viridian Forest between Viridian City and Pewter City, this road hides a trade for the rare Mr. Mime.

Route 2 is in Kanto, with Pewter City to the north and the entrance to Diglett's Cave. In the story you arrive from Viridian City to the south and continue through its entrance to Viridian Forest.

ROUTE 2 MAP

Fences break Route 2 into separate lanes on either side of Viridian Forest, with no direct crossing between them. Cutting the one blocking tree is the only thing that links the upper and lower stretches.

A line of trees splits Route 2 down the middle, so on your first trip north you keep to the western lane and pass through the forest.
  1. Leave Viridian City northward on the western lane, passing each row of ledges through its open gap.
  2. Where the lane narrows, keep to its west side, then cross east through the grass to the gap in the next ledge row.
  3. Just past that gap the Viridian Forest gate stands to the west, so go in and cross the forest.
2
The forest's north gate sets you back on Route 2 for the short stretch up to Pewter City.
  1. Walk north from the gate through the grass on the western side.
  2. At the top, turn east onto the path and leave the route northward into Pewter City.
3
Return after obtaining HM01 CutMoveCutNormalClassPhysicalPower50Accuracy95%PP30Cuts using claws, scythes, etc., and you can reach the Moon Stone and HP Up on the eastern strip, south of the Diglett's Cave exit.
  1. From the Viridian City edge, walk north a short way and cut the tree on your right, which needs the Cascade Badge.
  2. Head north up the eastern strip through the gaps in its ledges, picking up both items on the way.
  3. Back at the forest's north gate, cutting the tree beside it opens a path east to the Diglett's Cave entrance.

Pokemon Encounters

Wild grass is thin here, just the male and female Nidoran at 15 percent each among Rattata and Pidgey. The standout is an in-game trade that nets Mr. Mime, a Psychic-type you cannot catch anywhere in Yellow.

Route 2 Guide

  • Trading is unavoidable. Yellow's wild tables quietly drop some Pokemon, and a few like Pikachu only come as gifts, never as wild catches. On top of that, evolutions like Alakazam, Machamp, Golem, and Gengar only finish over a link cable. You'll need a Red or Blue cart to round out the dex.

  • Cut and Surf open the most ground. Cut clears the small trees blocking shortcuts, and the S.S. Anne's captain teaches it. Surf carries you across the water routes like 19 and 20. Strength comes later for boulder puzzles in caves. Spread these onto a party member you don't mind using as your traveler.
