Red & Blue Route 22

Just west of Viridian City, where your rival ambushes you early and the road later climbs toward Victory Road.

Route 22 is in Kanto, with Viridian City to the east. In the story it comes after Viridian Gym and continues north to Route 23.

The gatehouse guard turns you back until your first badge, and Rival Blue waits on Route 22 only between the parcel errand and that badge.

After the Viridian City gym, Rival Blue battles you again on the same path.

  1. Leave Viridian City heading west, go south down the sandy lane, then follow the path west to the tall grass.
  2. Turn north through the grass and the gap in the ledge row, then west on the upper path, where Rival Blue battles you.
  3. Carry on west to the end of the path, hop down the ledge beside the pond and cut south across the grass to the lower path.
  4. Take it west to the end, turn north, walk east above the fence and climb through the ledge gap to the gatehouse on the road to Route 23.

Both Nidoran appear early on this road, the male and female you need to build toward Nidoking and Nidoqueen. Spearow and Rattata crowd the rest of the grass between level 2 and 5.

Route 22 Guide

  • Yes. Each version locks away a handful of route species. Ekans, Oddish, Mankey, and Growlithe stay in Red, while Sandshrew, Bellsprout, Meowth, and Vulpix belong to Blue, with Scyther and Pinsir split the same way. Trading with the other version is the only way to fill those gaps.

  • Three rods, three givers. A fisherman in Vermilion City hands over the Old Rod, which only ever hooks Magikarp. The Good Rod comes from a fishing fan in Fuchsia City and adds Poliwag, Goldeen, and other common catches. The Super Rod, waiting on Route 12, reaches the rod-only rarities listed here.
