Red & Blue Route 10

A cliffside stretch outside Rock Tunnel and the Power Plant, with a lone Pokemon Center to heal at before the dark cave.

Route 10 is in Kanto, with Lavender Town to the south and the entrance to Power Plant. In the story you arrive from Route 9 to the west and continue north to Rock Tunnel.

ROUTE 10 MAP

This cliffside strip is mostly a straight pass-through, its one detour a pond you Surf across to reach the otherwise sealed Power Plant.

Nothing but the cave joins the two halves of Route 10, so this stretch ends at its north mouth.

With SurfMoveSurfWaterClassSpecialPower95Accuracy100%PP15A strong water-type attack., ride the river south to the far bank, where a PokéManiac battles you with Rhyhorn and Lickitung.

  1. Enter from Route 9, drop over the ledge, then head east and follow the narrow lane south along the eastern edge.
  2. Follow the lane to its southern end, double back west along the bottom, then start north, where a Jr. Trainer battles you with Pikachu and Clefairy.
  3. Climb the west side beside the row of cuttable trees, which only open a shortcut back to the lane, and walk east under the ledge into Rock Tunnel.

The lower half runs downhill over one-way ledges, and a path slips past every trainer here, so each fight is optional.
  1. Leave Rock Tunnel by its south entrance, walk east below the ledges and search the tree east of that entrance for a Max Ether.
  2. Head back west along the row below the mouth, crossing in front of a Jr. Trainer, who battles you with Pidgey and Pidgeotto.
  3. Carry on to the western wall, where a Hiker battles you with Geodude and Onix, and hop the ledge down the west edge.
  4. At the bottom, turn east past a second Hiker, who spots you and fights with Onix and Graveler.
  5. Cross the open ground east, then go south, where a PokéManiac battles you with Cubone and Slowpoke, and slip through the narrow gap into Lavender Town.

Pokemon Encounters

Spearow and a frequently-missed Voltorb share the grass, joined by the same Ekans-or-Sandshrew version slot as the routes nearby. The rods and a Surf tile add the usual water Pokemon.

ITEMS

Little is hidden on Route 10 beyond a single Super Potion near the Pokemon Center, but a Max Ether tucked east of the south Rock Tunnel entrance is the only real find.

Route 10 Guide

  • Yes. Each version locks away a handful of route species. Ekans, Oddish, Mankey, and Growlithe stay in Red, while Sandshrew, Bellsprout, Meowth, and Vulpix belong to Blue, with Scyther and Pinsir split the same way. Trading with the other version is the only way to fill those gaps.

  • Three rods, three givers. A fisherman in Vermilion City hands over the Old Rod, which only ever hooks Magikarp. The Good Rod comes from a fishing fan in Fuchsia City and adds Poliwag, Goldeen, and other common catches. The Super Rod, waiting on Route 12, reaches the rod-only rarities listed here.
