Every way west out of Route 8's eastern pocket crosses the sight of a Lass or a Gambler, but one fight is enough.
  1. Head south from the east edge, then turn west along the fence, where the Lass challenges you with two Clefairy.
  2. To also fight the Gambler at the corner, talk to him or walk below him.
  3. Head north up the path, where the Super Nerd battles you with Grimer and Muk once you step above him.
2
Once you reach the middle field, four trainers stand in a column while the only grass hides in a pen behind cuttable trees.
  1. Walk west along the path and turn north toward the column, where the Super Nerd battles you with a lone Koffing.
  2. Back on the lower row, face the Lass at the column's foot, whose team of five ends with Pikachu.
  3. Circle to the west side to face the Lass with Nidorina, then battle the other west-facing Lass below her.
  4. To skip the column, turn south just short of its foot and follow the lane down beside the grass pen.

At the west end a thirsty guard turns you back from the gatehouse until you bring a drink, so take the stairs building for now.
  1. Follow the lower path west, where the Gambler spots you if you cross his line, sending out Poliwag and Poliwhirl.
  2. Near the gatehouse, the Super Nerd battles you with Voltorb, Koffing and Magnemite once you enter his row.
  3. Go up the path to the stairs building and head west through the Underground Path.

Route 8 Guide

  • Yes. Each version locks away a handful of route species. Ekans, Oddish, Mankey, and Growlithe stay in Red, while Sandshrew, Bellsprout, Meowth, and Vulpix belong to Blue, with Scyther and Pinsir split the same way. Trading with the other version is the only way to fill those gaps.

  • Three rods, three givers. A fisherman in Vermilion City hands over the Old Rod, which only ever hooks Magikarp. The Good Rod comes from a fishing fan in Fuchsia City and adds Poliwag, Goldeen, and other common catches. The Super Rod, waiting on Route 12, reaches the rod-only rarities listed here.
