RED & BLUE POKEMON CHECKLIST

Red and Blue started it all with 151 Pokemon, but no single cart can catch them all. Ekans, Oddish, Mankey, and Growlithe are FireRed exclusives, while Sandshrew, Vulpix, Meowth, and Bellsprout sit on the Blue side. You'll need a friend with the other version or a second Game Boy to fill in the gaps. The Missing filter below shows exactly which Pokemon you haven't caught, and the Remaining section breaks down how to get each one.

FAQ

  • You can catch most of the 151 Kanto Pokemon in a single cart, but around a dozen are exclusive to the other version. Ekans, Oddish, Mankey, Growlithe, and Scyther are only in Red. Sandshrew, Vulpix, Meowth, Bellsprout, and Pinsir are only in Blue. You also can't get the other two starters or trade evolutions without a link cable.

  • Alakazam, Machamp, Golem, and Gengar all require a trade to evolve from Kadabra, Machoke, Graveler, and Haunter. There's no way around this in Gen 1. You need access to a second Game Boy and cartridge or a friend who can trade back.

  • Yes. Switch to the Missing filter and it shows only uncaught Pokemon from the Kanto Dex, grouped by method. You can see at a glance which ones need trades, which need specific routes, and which are locked to the other version.
