Red & Blue Route 9

A rough belt of grassland east of Cerulean City toward Rock Tunnel, alive with Spearow and a crowd of aggressive Trainers.

Route 9 is in Kanto, with Rock Tunnel to the east and Cerulean City to the west. In the story it comes after Diglett's Cave and continues east to Route 10.

Pokemon Encounters

Higher-level grass here means Spearow and Rattata up top, with Red's Ekans and Blue's Sandshrew completing the reptiles. Nothing rare turns up, but it is a solid place to toughen a team before Rock Tunnel.

ITEMS

Route 9's TM30 Teleport warps you straight back to the last Pokemon Center, a handy exit before HMs take over the job. An Ether off the path is the only other grab.

Route 9 Guide

  • Yes. Each version locks away a handful of route species. Ekans, Oddish, Mankey, and Growlithe stay in Red, while Sandshrew, Bellsprout, Meowth, and Vulpix belong to Blue, with Scyther and Pinsir split the same way. Trading with the other version is the only way to fill those gaps.

  • Three rods, three givers. A fisherman in Vermilion City hands over the Old Rod, which only ever hooks Magikarp. The Good Rod comes from a fishing fan in Fuchsia City and adds Poliwag, Goldeen, and other common catches. The Super Rod, waiting on Route 12, reaches the rod-only rarities listed here.
