Red & Blue Diglett's Cave

Diglett and Dugtrio swarm this cramped tunnel that burrows under the hills to connect Route 11 and Route 2.

Diglett's Cave is in Kanto, with its entrance on Route 2. In the story you arrive from Route 11 through its entrance and it comes before Route 9.

Drilled straight through the hills, the cave is a one-drop link between its two ends, with no branches to steer around once you are inside.

You can ride your bike through all of Diglett's Cave, and wild battles can break out anywhere on the tunnel floor.
  1. At the west end of Route 11, walk into the little cave hut and climb down its ladder into the tunnel.
  2. From the southeast ladder the passage climbs west and north like a staircase, opening into a few wider chambers on the way.
  3. There is no trainer to fight and no item, hidden or visible, so keep working northwest to the ladder in the far corner.
  4. Go up it into the Route 2 side hut and leave through its door onto the north end of Route 2.

Diglett's Cave Guide

  • Rock Tunnel is the only one you can't see inside. Mt. Moon, the Seafoam Islands, Victory Road, and the Unknown Dungeon all light themselves, so Flash is just a convenience there. Claim HM05 Flash from Oak's Aide in the Route 2 gatehouse once you've caught ten different species.

  • Victory Road and the Seafoam Islands both gate progress behind it. Victory Road uses boulder-on-switch puzzles to open doors, while Seafoam needs you to shove boulders into holes to kill the water current. You earn HM04 Strength from the Safari Zone Warden after returning his Gold Teeth.

  • Worth it when you're only passing through. Repels turn off any encounter weaker than your lead Pokemon, which makes a high-level run through Golbat-infested Victory Road far quieter. Just pull the Repel back off when you actually want a rarity like Chansey or Clefairy to appear.
