Is Gengar Good in Red & Blue Playthrough?
Trade evolution gates the strongest Ghost-type in the game. Gengar is fast, hits hard, and MoveHypnosis gives it an out against anything it can't overpower. Top-tier if you can find a trade partner, but Haunter alone is already excellent.

How to Get Gengar in Red & Blue
Gengar can only come from a trade. A Haunter evolves the instant it changes hands, so completing the Ghost line means finding a partner to trade with and trade back.
Catch Gastly or Haunter at any of these 1 spot to eventually evolve into Gengar.
Encountered via tall grass encounters

Gengar Weakness
Type-wise, Gengar takes extra damage from Ground, Psychic, and Ghost. Normal and Fighting moves do nothing thanks to a full immunity. Gengar's special bulk (base 130 Special) helps absorb special-type weaknesses, though physical moves exploit the lower Defense.
| Damage | Types |
|---|---|
| 2x (Weak) | Ground, Psychic, Ghost |
| 0.5x (Resist) | Grass |
| 0.25x (Resist) | Poison |
| 0x (Immune) | Normal, Fighting |
- Only 15 types exist — Dark, Steel, and Fairy are absent
- Ghost has no effect on Psychic (a known bug, fixed in Gen II)
- Special stat governs both offense and defense — no Sp.Atk / Sp.Def split

RB Gengar Best Moveset
130 Special and 110 Speed make Gengar one of the fastest special attackers available. Normal-type immunity blocks MoveBody Slam and MoveHyper Beam from the physical attackers that dominate. MoveHypnosis shuts down whatever switches in. Sleeps targets, fires special attacks, and the Normal immunity makes it nearly impossible to revenge with physical moves.

TMs carry this one. Gengar learns Lick and Night Shade naturally for STAB, but the offensive range comes almost entirely from technical machines. Psychic and Normal and beyond give it real matchup play.

Gengar Red & Blue Guide
Mega Evolution isn't available in Red & Blue, but Gengar does have a Mega form in Gen 6-7 games (X/Y, ORAS, Sun/Moon). Mega Gengar hits 655 BST.
Gengar is obtained by trade-evolving Haunter. Catch or evolve a Haunter first, then trade.
In Red & Blue, Gengar plays as a sweeper. It outspeeds most threats, so it can pressure opponents before they move.
Gigantamax Gengar is exclusive to Sword & Shield, so it's not usable in Red & Blue. The form has a unique appearance and a signature G-Max move.
Game Availability
Since debuting in Red & Blue, Gengar has appeared in 22 titles over 9 generations. Along the way, it received a Mega form in Generation 6 and a Gigantamax form in Generation 8, keeping it relevant across different competitive metas.
